The world is changing and, with it, the way farming is done. In order to ensure that regional agriculture is properly equipped to meet the challenges of the future, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV has joined forces with the Fraunhofer Institutes for Integrated Circuits IIS, Microsystems and Solid State Technologies EMFT, Computer Graphics Research IGD, and Large Structures in Production Engineering IGP to establish the Fraunhofer Center for Biogenic Value Creation and Smart Farming.

This joint project is to launch mid-2021 and will initially run for five years. Its purpose is to develop innovative technologies that promote sustainable agriculture right along the entire value chain, thereby meeting environmental, consumer health, social, and animal welfare standards. The individual expertise of the various institutes will intermesh to enable a transformation towards biologically more acceptable systems displaying high biodiversity. Alongside universities and other establishments of higher education, key stakeholders such as the Bavarian Agricultural Association are also to be involved.

Fraunhofer IVV is to focus primarily on research and development into new ways of processing agricultural products with a view to maximizing food safety and product quality along the value chain.
