How fragrances influence our psyche and our body
Have you ever wondered why the scent of lavender is calming or citrus notes invigorating? Fragrances are more than just pleasant perceptions - they have been proven to have a profound effect on the psyche and body. This is due both to their chemical composition and to unconscious associations that we develop through personal experiences and cultural imprints.

Our research shows how these associations can lower the heart rate, relax the muscles and lift the mood. Some scent molecules even act independently of conscious perceptions, as we were able to prove using the smell of the Myrothamnus flabellifolia shrub as an example - here, this smell was shown to have a calming effect. In a new study, we investigated how fruity or herbal odors of shower gels have cognitive links to invigorating or relaxing effects. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of products that deliver on their promises - from the selection of fragrances to the validation of marketing claims.
Prof. Dr. Jessica Freiherr explains how we use such studies to support our customers in product development in the latest episode of our podcast "On behalf of the future" (in German). Here you can also find out how scientific evidence increases the acceptance and marketability of cosmetic products. Take advantage of our expertise - we are your partner for innovative fragrance research and evaluate and develop your products with a promise of efficacy!
