Development of bespoke sensory test systems

We offer you the development of various sniffing tests which are specially adapted to your specific requirements. The test systems contain defined odor qualities consisting of single substances or odor mixtures. You can use the test systems as references in quality control or as a threshold test for the training and validation of your own sensor panel.

On request, our team will also teach your employees in training sessions directly on location, during which you will be introduced to the use of the respective sniffing tests. We would be pleased to advise you on bespoke analytical methods for your quality and process control.

Olfactory dosing and test systems

Odor dosing systems such as an olfactometer must in general possess high-precision dosing, high time resolution, and high dosing reproducibility. Measurement of liberation into the gas phase (dynamic, time-resolved) including determination of the concentrations of molecules in the gas phase is performed using online mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). This gives you the opportunity to validate any odor dosing system or odor release system. We also offer in-house training on the use of odor dosing systems when carrying out olfactory tests.

Training and quality monitoring

The identification, assignment, and evaluation of the odors of foods, everyday articles, and other materials requires experience, training, and in particular suitable reference systems.

For this we offer you customized standards, for example in the form of odor-solutions, user-friendly odor sticks, or as solid-based formulations or sachets. Tests to determine potential anosmia (smell impairment) are also offered.

Furthermore, we develop odor test systems for proband groups to use for odor recognition and assignment – so-called association or identification tests. We customize these for your specific use (food, material, or situation-associated tests). Examples are tests for the recognition and assignment of spoiling or oxidation processes or standard packaging contaminants that can lead to off-odors/off-flavors in foods.


Test validation

All the offered forms of administration (odor sticks, solutions, etc.) can be subjected to stability and shelf-life tests and evaluation for toxicological exposure. If desired, this testing can also be carried out for substances requested by you.


Test systems for sensory analytics

We can prepare customized test mixtures or individual substances for your analyses and training needs for GC-olfactometry. This includes defined odor compounds and standards marked with stable isotopes that can be used to quantify odor-active substances in stable isotope dilution analysis. On request we can synthesize defined target substances for you.

We also offer on-site training when setting up analytical systems and methods for sensory analytics, for example GC-Olfactometry (GC-O) and stable isotope dilution analysis. Training in headspace and online mass spectrometry techniques can also be given.
