Sustainable production of food

The rapidly growing world population and the urgent need to protect the climate make a reorientation of the food supply imperative. In order to reduce the high resource input for the production of meat products, the development of alternative sustainable protein sources and new production processes for food is essential."NewFoodSystems" aims to lay the foundation for a sustainable production of high-quality food in the spirit of the bio-economy. Novel cultivation methods and production methods should facilitate the production of innovative, nutritionally high-quality and safe food in the future.

Research funding by the BMBF

The Innovation Area "NewFoodSystems" is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as one of four innovation areas of the program "Innovation Areas Bioeconomy" within the framework of the "National Research Strategy Bioeconomy 2030".

Beginning on December 1, 2019, the BMBF will provide a funding amount of 20 million Euro over a period of five years.

"NewFoodSystems" is coordinated by the Max-Rubner-Institute (MRI) in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer IVV. About 60 partners from science and industry contribute to the development of target-oriented results.

STARTING PROJECT

"Sustainable
protein ingredients"

The Fraunhofer IVV creates a comprehensive protein database with important application-specific parameters.

Research project
"Protein layers"

Edible coatings and casings for plant-based foods should be plant-based. That is why we are researching the use of plant proteins for this purpose.
