Prof. Dr. Andrea Büttner: Director of Institute
As of April 2020, Prof. Andrea Büttner takes over as Executive Director of Fraunhofer IVV, after having been Co-Director since November 2019, and prior to that, Deputy Director since 2017. Prof. Büttner additionally holds the position of Full Professor at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), heading the chair of Aroma and Smell Research, and as of April 2020 is scientific head of the Competence Center Food and Packaging Technology – KLEVERTEC for Fraunhofer IVV.
Prof. Büttner studied food chemistry at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, then pursued and received her doctorate, and subsequently her habilitation qualification, at the Technical University of Munich in the field of flavor research. She joined Fraunhofer IVV in 2007, where she developed and launched the business field Product Performance, and established the Department of Sensory Analytics, which she headed until becoming Director of the Institute.
During the same period, she established and headed the Aroma Research Group at FAU, where she was appointed W2 Professor of Aroma Research in 2012 and subsequently, in 2017, W3 Professor of Aroma and Smell Research.
Besides her role as Executive Director of Fraunhofer IVV, Prof. Büttner is on the Management Board of the Fraunhofer Cluster Circular Plastics Economy CCPE® and participates in the program commitee of the International Conference on Optical Characterization of Materials (OCM-2021).
Prof. Büttner’s current research focuses on the improvement and ensurance of food and product quality, the analysis of impurities and contaminants, and the development of analytics and diagnostics in networked and intelligent systems, in order to establish and safeguard the highest product quality whilst maintaining consumer acceptance. A particular objective for Prof. Büttner in these endeavors is to pay especial attention to sustainable and resource-saving management and to ensure product safety and consumer protection.
